September 1, 2014

The East Whiteland Fire Company asks all East Whiteland and Charlestown Township citizens to participate in National Preparedness Month (NPM) that starts are on September 1st! This year’s theme is “Be Disaster Aware, Take Action to Prepare.” Take action by participating in America’s PrepareAthon! Each week has a preparedness theme. Check them out and get yourself prepared.

• Week 1 – How to… Reconnect with Family After a Disaster.

• Week 2 – Know How To plan for specific needs before a Disaster.

• Week 3 – How to… Build an Emergency Kit.

• Week 4 & 5 – How to… Practice for an emergency.

MAKE A FAMILY DISASTER PLAN

~ Discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family, know your home's vulnerability to fire, flooding, and winds.

~ Locate the safest place in your home for each hurricane hazard.

~ Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet.

~ Stock non-perishable disaster supplies and a Family Disaster Supply Kit.

~ Check your insurance coverage - flood damage is not usually covered by homeowner's insurance.

~ Identify ahead of time where you could go if told to evacuate - keep handy the phone numbers of these places and a road map in case roads are clogged or closed.

~ Ask an out-of-state friend to be your "family contact." After a disaster it is often easier to call long distance.

~ Plan how to take care of your pets.

PREPARE A DISASTER SUPPLIES KIT

~ Water - one gallon of water per person per day for about 3 to 7 days

~ Food - enough for 3 to 7 days , canned food and can opener

~ First Aid Kit/ Medicine

~ Clothing - including rain gear and sturdy shoes.

~ Blankets/Pillows.

~ Flashlight and Batteries

~ Telephone - fully charged cell phone with extra battery

~ Radio - battery operated

~ Cash and credit cards

~ Important documents in waterproof container (insurance, deeds, medical records, social security card, bank account numbers)

~ Tools

~ Pet Care Items (proper identification, medical/immunization records, food and water, leash, carrier or cage)
